PARENTS

James Moore #1.5 and Rachel Holder

BORN

24 August 1828 at Long Reach, Kings County, New Brunswick. Christened 9 October 1835 at Trinity Anglican Church, Kingston, King's County with her brother Robert James Moore and several of her sisters.

MARRIED

1 May 1852 in West Zorra Township, Oxford County Ontario to Silas William Thornton by

Rev. George Turner of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Witnesses Lyman Thornton (brother) and Peter Karn (Kearns) (husband of Silas' sister Priscilla Thornton) Brock District Marriage Records, Page 179

DIED

3 November 1893 at Harrisville, Alcona County Mich of "softening of the Brain".

BURIED

Springport Cemetery, Harrisville (approx. one mile south of Harrisville on Highway M-23. Plot is adjacent to highway about 1/3 way southerly from north limits of cemetery). Gravestone inscription reads "Died Nov 3 1893, age 65 years, 2 months and 10 days" (birth date calculated from stone.) (Alcona death records state Died 3 November 1894 age 54 years, 3 months and 11 days.) which would have made her about 12 years old when married)

CHILDREN

* indicates a separate chapter on the person and descendants

#3.5.9.1 * Theresa Thornton, born 24 September 1854 in West Zorra Township

see separate file

.2 * James T. Thornton born 12 April 1856 likely in West Zorra Township. (Ref 1900 census).

See separate file

.3 * Silas Thornton born 1858 likely in West Zorra Township.

.4 * Ida May Thornton born 1860, Port Huron Village, St. Clair County Mich.

.5 * Ada Thornton born 31 July 1863 at Port Huron Village.

.6 * Maude Madella (Della) Thornton born 12 April 1865 in Sand Beach Township Huron County Mich. (Ref. marriage record) See separate file

.7 * Mary Ester Thornton born 4 July 1868 Sand Beach Township (Perhaps Harbor Beach village) Huron County Mich.

.8 * Caroline Augusta Thornton (Carrie) born April 1870, likely Forester Township as she was 2 ½ months old at time of 1860 census.

.9 * Olla Alberta (Bertie) Thornton born 24 June 1871 likely Forester Township. (near or at Richmondville)

Caroline Moore was the 9th of 11 children and with her parents had moved from Long Reach King's County New Brunswick in May of 1844 and lived on Lot 2 Concession 3 West Zorra Oxford County

Silas, was born 22 or 26 December 1828 (calculated from death records), and was the son of Albert Thornton and Rachel Williams. He may have been born in Vermont or Ontario although it is very likely that he was born in West Zorra Township, Oxford County as his older brother Chauncy was born in Ontario. (He was not born in England although the Alcona death records state that).

From 1843 to after 1847 he lived with his father, mother and brothers Chauncy, Lyman and Truman on Lots 3 and 4 Concession "West of the Mitchell Road" in Blanchard Township Perth County.

He was however again a resident of West Zorra when the Census of 1851-2 was taken living with his brother Chauncy and his family.

When married in 1852 one of the witnesses was his brother Lyman and the other his brother-in-law Peter Karn who had married Silas' older sister Priscilla in February 1842.

The 1876 atlas of Oxford County shows P. Kerns living West ½ Lot 4 Concession 5 West Zorra Township.

Silas was brother of Truman J. Thornton who married Caroline Moore's younger sister Susan Maria Moore and who by the 1870's lived in AuSable area of Iosco County Mich. Another brother Chauncy lived in the Deckerville Area, Sanilac County Michigan and yet another brother Lyman also lived in the Alcona County area. Each family had children with the same first names, and thus it is difficult to distinguish to which family a certain person belonged. (Refer to Albert Thornton family history by RGM)

It is likely that the Thorntons lived in West Zorra for about 7 years after they were married. For some unknown reason the assessment rolls of West Zorra for 1850 listed Caroline Moore as the owner of Lot 5 Concession 6 with an assessment of 14 Pounds, however a check of County land records shows that she did not own the land. So far Caroline has not been found in the 1850 Oxford County census.

Before 1860 the Silas Thorntons were in Port Huron Village in St. Clair County Michigan (birth of daughter Ida May 1860). The village census (see References not yet competed) of 1860 lists Silas as a teamster, with personal possessions with a value of $150, but no real estate so very likely he was a "renter". Caroline's sister Mary Moore was living with them, Caroline's age was listed as 31 and Mary's as 35. Mary was deaf and dumb from scarlet fever.

By 1860 other members of the Moore and Thornton families were in the Port Huron Area. Caroline's brother Walter Moore who was a carpenter lived in Marysville. (just south of Port Huron).

Caroline's sister Sarah and her husband John Britney lived in the Marysville area as well. Caroline's brother Robert Moore who was also carpenter, although he still lived in Oxford County had built in Sarnia and in all likelihood in Port Huron as well.

By April of 1865 Silas was living in Sand Beach Township Huron County Michigan as daughter Della was born there according to her marriage record (Alcona County).

In the 1870 census of Forester Township Sanilac County, Silas was listed as a farmer. Near by if not next door, lived his brother Truman Thornton along with his family. Truman was listed as a farm laborer and did not own land (See reference 1870 census). It is thought that they lived near Richmondville, as daughter "Bertie" gave Richmondville as her birthplace (but no proof has yet been found). Thus some time between April of 1865 and mid 1870 Silas had again moved.

By 1870 brother Lyman was in Sanilac Township, Sanilac County, and brother Chauncy was living near Deckerville, Marion Township, Sanilac County. It was likely that Silas was Marion Township Sanilac in July 1873 when their eldest daughter Theresa married William Fockler at Deckerville and probably was in Marion by 1871.

In 1875 children, James, Silas, Ida, Ada, Mauda, Mary Esther and Caroline were attending school in Marion Twp Sanilac County They (as well as Bertie) were also there in 1876 but not found after this time so it is likely that Silas left about 1876/7. Silas' brother Truman was in Iosco County by 1875. Silas was in Alcona County when his son James married Jeanette Hamilton in July 1882 and according to his obit was in Iosco County previous to being in Alcona County. However a property owner check of Iosco county do not shown any land registration for Silas (Registration of Deeds, clerk's office). The 1880 census has not as yet been checked to ascertain Silas occupation but it was likely a farmer or woodsman. Silas property holdings in Alcona county have not as yet been researched but it is likely that he lived on or near Section 4 Harrisville Township.

After Caroline's death, Silas remarried to Lucy Thornton Fuller at West Harrisville on 7 October 1897. Lucy was the daughter of Calvin Thornton and Phoebe Aldrich. Lucy gave her age as 66 and her place of residence as Sanilac County. Silas gave his age as 68.

(Born 1829). Witnesses were Maude M. Genge (#3.6.9.6), Silas' daughter and Effie Dell Genge (perhaps Della's daughter Elva). Lucy Thornton had been married to David Fuller in West Zorra Township on 26 June 1849 by Rev George Turner of the Methodist Episcopal Church. (It not known what Relationship Calvin Thornton was to Silas). It is not known when Lucy died although when Silas died in August 1903 he was referred to as a widower.

Silas' gravestone in the Springport Cemetery reads " Silas died 24 August 1903, age 73". Alcona County death records read "Died 28 August 1903 widower, age 74 years 8 months and 2 days occupation farmer, Resident of Harrisville Township, Cause of death, chronic diarrhea.

He died at his son James Thornton's home in West Harrisville according to his obituary.

The Obit also stated that he had lived in Sanilac, Iosco and Alcona Counties.

In her memories dated September 1969, his grand daughter Charlotte Genge Westacott (#4.6.9.6.5) remembers Silas as a kind, gentle soft spoken man with white hair, beard and mustache and who died when she was about 10 years old (1903).

.5 Lester Douglas born 6 May 1899 died Jan 1971 Mich (SSD)

portion of Ada’s obit from Presque Isle County News, Millersburg, MI, Sat., 23 Jul 1910, pg 1.

Overexerting herself running to catch the train bearing the Sunday school picnic to Aloha Wednesday morning, Mrs. Wm. Douglas died soon after the train, loaded with hundreds of merry picnickers, left this station. Mrs. Douglas, who was a very fleshy person, with her daughter, Ardelle and Spray, was coming down the main street a couple blocks from the depot as the train pulled into the station.

The girls ran on ahead and asked the conductor to hold the train a minute, which he did. Mrs. Douglas came through the short way by the engine house, as fast as she could, and reached the train entirely exhausted, but not in an apparently serious condition. She found a seat and was conversing with acquaintances when she suddenly fainted, and in spite of all that could be done, she expired. When the train reached Onaway she was removed to the grass in front of the depot and everything was done to revive her, but without avail.

Her sister, Mrs. A. B. Hamilton and daughter, Ila, were on the train as were all Mrs. Douglas' children. They telephoned at once to Mr. Hamilton, who drove to Onaway and had the remains taken care of. They were brought here on the afternoon train and her relatives summoned.

It was a particularly (sic) sad death coming close to that of the husband and father but a few weeks ago, and has cast a gloom over the whole town. The orphaned children have the heartfelt sympathy of the whole town.

Mrs. Douglas was 47 years old, and is survived by five children, Spray, Ardelle, Ira, Lester and Carrie. Mrs. A. B. Hamilton is a sister. She has other sisters and brothers, of whom, Mrs. James Morrow of Alpena, accompanied by her husband, Mrs. Fred Byce and James Thornton, of Harrisville, were present at the funeral. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Frank Copeland at the Baptist church on Friday morning at 10 o'clock, and was largely attended.

Many beautiful floral offerings were sent by sorrowing friends. The interment was in Riverside cemetery. The Onaway Outlook, Thurs., 23 Jul 1910, pg 1, adds only that Mrs. Douglas was subject to heart difficulties. Riverside cemetery is located in Millersburg.

Charlotte Genge Westacott in her memories describes her Aunt Ada as short and fat.

When married in 1890 William Douglas gave his age as 32 (born about 1858) and Ada gave hers as 26. William was son of William H. Douglas and Eunice Clark, was a resident of Alpena and gave his occupation as a woodsman and had been previously married. Witnesses were Sandy Hamilton and Mary Thornton.
