NEW LAND PIONEER: A DECKER FAMILY HISTORY By Chrystol (Holmes) Lindsey Previous Index Page 7 Pages Next Elizabeth died on 22 August 1843 and is buried in the Old Walled cemetery in Eminence. She didn’t live to see victory over the serfdom they had known all their married life. On 13 January 1849 Peter Decker sold his farm to Philo Sweet of Fulton, New York, for $1600.00. On 20 May 1849, Peter married Polly (Rockefeller) Andrews of Summit. The ceremony was performed by Elisha Brown, Esg., Justice of the Peace. It is believed they lived in the village of Summit for Polly owned a house there. Peter died on 9 May 1852 at age 79 years, 7 months, and 3 days. He was buried beside Elizabeth in the Old Walled cemetery. Their tombstones are still standing in the cemetery but the land is now private and has been allowed to grow into weeds and underbrush with trees fallen around them. On 16 August 1852, Polly Andrews Decker sold lot #50 in Summit described as "being in tract of land called Strassburgh Patent containing ¾ acres" to Margaret Dingham, also of Summit, for 300.00. In New York State Census 1855, Polly, 73 years old, was living with Margaret Dingham in Summit. Polly said she was born in Columbia County, New York, and had lived in the town of Summit 20 years. She died 8 May 1859 and is buried in the Morseville Cemetery in Jefferson, New York.
A printed copy of the family section of the Decker family bible is in the Middleburgh, New York Library. The original bible has been lost and we are grateful to Mrs. Frances Spencer, Middleburgh librarian for many years, for preserving the family information from it. We have used this family section to prove the names and birthrates of Peter, Elizabeth, and their children as well as the marriage date for Peter and Elizabeth. In all cases where they were also proved with legal records, the information has proved to be correct.
Peter and Elizabeth had children: * 2) David Youngs born 13 July 1795 in New Jersey. * 3) Richard Havens born 4 July 1797 in Suffolk County, New York page 7
