SERGT. FOY D. BURGESS

PORT SANILAC

Was born at Port Sanilac, June 1, 1890, son of George A. Burgess, attended the Port Sanilac school. His occupation was general merchandise and was connected with the firm of Dunlap & Burgess, at Port Sanilac. He has two sisters and three brothers: Mrs. Grace Urie ad Vera; Earl, Vance and Ross. He is a Selective Service man and went to Camp Custer September 21, 1917. Was transferred to Camp Green, N. C. March 8th 1918, and in April was sent to Camp Mills, N. Y., and embarked for France May 6, 1918. He is a member of Co. E, 58th Infantry, 4th Division. He was with his Division in all its important fights, going " over the top" four times and didn’t receive a search. In a from Lieut. F. H. Harrison, M. C., son of rev. Harrison, of Port Sanilac, he says " The part played by the 4th Division has been one to reflect some little credit to all". It has been in every drive from Chateau Thierry, Vesles, Fismes, St. Miehiel, Verdun and the last stand along the Argonne-Mcuse." He is now with the army of occupation. Was promoted to rank of Sergeant. August 1918.

PTE. ERWIN L. PAYNE

BROWN CITY

Was born at Brown City, September 8, 1889, son of Frank and Nora E. Payne, and attended the Brown City schools. His occupation was farming. He has four brothers and one sister: Arthur , Floyd, Carter Ivan and Maude E. He was a Selective Service man and went to Camp Custer August 30, 1918, and was member of Co. F, Infantry. He was muster out of service January 21, 1919.

DECKERVILLE

Was born in Downington, Sept. 24, 1894, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Kenny of Custer Township, and attended the Downington school. His occupation was farming. He was called to Camp Custer August 27, 1918, where he a at present with the Field Artillery. He has five brothers and four sisters. One brother George, overseas, and one in the hospital at Fort Sheridan, Illinois.

Cleary Business College. His occupation was farming . he has six brothers: Mike, John, William, Nelson, George and Leo. He is an Enlisted man, enlisting in the army July, 1918. He belongs to Co. L, Causal Detachment and still is station at Camp Custer.

Was born in Elk Township, May 30, 1892, son of Thomas and Letitia Frostick, and attended the Stilson school. His occupation was farming. He has three sisters: Mable, Ida and Anna. He went to Vancouver Barracks July 1, 1918. And was leader of his contingent. He was a member of the 126th and 119th Spruce Squadrons, and was mustered out of service January 16, 1919.

PTE. EDWARD E. NELSON

TYRE

Was born at Oscoda, Michigan April 20, 1890, son of Edward and Eliza Nelson, and attended the Oscoda and Detroit schools. His occupation was farming. He has one brother and two sisters: Lloyd; Matilda and Emma. As a Selective Service man he went to Camp Custer July 22, 1918. He was member of the 14th Ammunition Train. Was muster out of the service January 17, 1919.

PTE. ALBERT F. BLACK

SANDUSKY

Was born in Deckerville, December 10, 1896, son of

George T. and Alice J. Black, attended the Gleason school and graduated from the Sandusky high school. His occupation was farming. He has one brother and three sisters: Jay; Ethel, Jennie and Georgia. After graduating he attended the national Areo school. He is an enlisted man entering the army service at Detroit May 25, 1918, was transferred to Camp Merritt, N. J., and from there was sent to the Panama Canal, a member of the Machine Gun Co., 33rd Infantry. His company was placed at the Canal to guard this waterway and was known as the "Jackass Battery." He is still in the service.

Was born at Mills, Marion Township, September 30, 1895, son of George A. and Elizabeth Falconer, attended the Doane and Downington schools. His occupation was farming. He has one brother: Russell. He was assigned to the 334th Motor Truck Co. While in bathing at Camp Custer he was drowned July 20, 1918.

Was born at Kelvin, Ontario, Canada, January 9, 1891, son of William and Alice Leach, attended the Shabbona school and Michigan Agricultural college. His occupation was butter maker. He has one sister: Mrs. Flossie VanConant. As a Selective Service man he was sent to Columbus Barracks May 10, 1918, and was transferred to Bakery Co. 346th. He sailed from this country for overseas November, 1918. He still in the service.

Was born at West Park, Ohio, May 14, 1894, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Rasmussen, attended school at Rocky River, Ohio, and Marlette. His occupation was Horticulturist. He has one brother Carl. He is an enlisted men entering the Navy at Detroit 10, 1918,, he is a fireman on the U. S. S. America and is still in the service.

Was born in Austin Township, August 1, 1895, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Hunt, and attended school at Freiburger. His occupation was farming. He has three brothers and three sisters: Hiram, Frank Dewey; Mina, Ida, Florence. He is a Selective Service man and went to Columbus Barracks May 1o, 1918; transferred to Waco Texas, May 14, 1918, and to Camp Merritt, New Jersey, August 1, 1918; went overseas August 16, and was wounded in action October 17, in France. He belongs to the 34th Infantry, Co. G.

He has three brothers and two sisters: Irvin F., Norman W., and Eben R.; Ruth C. and Thelma M. His first brother two brothers are in the army. He is a Selective Service man and went from this county to Camp Custer November 22, 1917, and in June 1918, was transferred to Wilmington, Delaware. Was born in Moore Township, April 8, 1894, son of Frank T. and Lenora Arnold, attended the District school. His occupation was farming. He has three sisters and four brothers: Olive, Lydia and Lucy; Vern, Edward Alva and Ora. As a Selective Service man he went to Camp Custer September 21, 1917. Was transferred to Camp McArthur, Texas, in October. He sailed for France February 8th 1918, with a Machine Gun Co., of the 32nd Division. Headquarters Troop. He return to his home in Moore township in May 1919.

Was born in Sandusky, March 9, 1897, son of Fred and Jennie McLaughlin, attended Sandusky high school. And Northwestern University, Chicago. His occupation was a musician. He has two brothers and three sisters: Nelson and Russell; Martha, Irene and Nillie. He is an enlisted man joining the Marines at Chicago., August 29, 1917. He was sent to Paris Island, S. C., and was assigned to 330 th Co., Battalion R. He has been honorably discharge from the service.

Was born in Marlette, February 28, 1889, son of John and Susanna Heussner, attended Marlette public schools. His occupation was farming. He has three brothers and two sisters: George, Martin and Carl; Elizabeth, Mrs. W. l. Gibson. He is a Selective Service man and left for Camp Custer September 21, 1917,and on October23, was transferred to Camp McArthur, and embarked for overseas March 25, 1918, and still in the service. He was promoted to rank of Wagoner December 15, 1917, and belongs to 107 Sanitary Train, Ambulance Headquarters Sector.

 

PTE. MERVIN A WINER

MARLETTE

Was born at Crediton, Ontario, June 10, 1896, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Winer, attended the Marlette schools. His occupation was farming. He has one sister and brother: Lillian and Alvin. He is a Selective Service man and went to Ann Arbor for special mechanical training August 15, 1918. He transferred to Camp Merritt, N. J., September 15, sailing from there for overseas November 12. He is attached to the 118th Sanitary Squad and still is in the service.

Was born at Snover, February 1, 1895, son of Austin and Leona Batchelor, attended school at school at North Speaker. His occupation farming. He has two sisters and three brothers: Pearl and Ethel; Leo, Roy and Glenn. As a Selective Service man he went to Camp Cuter April 29, 1918. He sallied for France July 25, with the 85th Division, a member of Co. G. He received a wound in both of his limbs October 21, 1918. He has not been discharged.

Was born in Moore Township, September 23, 1896, so of Robert M. and Beatrice Moore, attended the District school and Port Huron Business college. His occupation was bookkeeper. He has three brothers: Carmon L.; Robert M. and Wesley. He is an Enlisted man joining the Navy at Detroit July 19, 1918. Was sent the great Lakes Training Station and later to Philadelphia. He sailed for overseas October, 1918, on the U. S. S. Lake Traverse. He is still in the service. He was married March 1, 1917, to miss Esther Mary Randall, at Detroit.

(date and place of birth not given) He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. S. Grow, and is a farmer by occupation. He is Selective Service man, and was sent Vancouver Barracks, Washington, July 1918. He belonged to the 142 Provisional Regiment. Was muster out of the service at Camp Custer December 023, 1918.

He belongs to Shurly Base Hospital No. 36, as a druggist. He arrived home in May, 1919.

Was born in Lamotte Township, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Adams, attended Parker district school and Ferris Institute. His occupation was farming. He has two brothers and two sisters: William and Russell; Clara and Mrs. Bruce Wilson. He is a Selective Service man and went to Camp Custer November 22, 1917. With the 32nd Division he was transferred to Camp McArthur, Texas, December 20, 1917. Was sent overseas February 1, 1918. Received promotion to rank of Corporal June, 1918. He is a member of the 107th Ammunition Train 32nd Division. He is still in the service. Was married December 25, 1915, to Miss Edna Jickling, daughter of W. W. Jicklng, of Lamotte township, who died February 19, 1917.

Was born in Buel township, May 5, 1895, son of Samuel R., and Maggie J. Surbrook, and attended the District school. His occupation was farming. He has fur brothers and five sisters: Clarence, Lewis, Oliver and Burch; Eva, Florence, Vernice, Sarah, and Esther. He went to Camp Custer May 27, 1918, as a Selective Service man. Was transferred to Boston July 29, assigned to United States Coast Guard duty. He belonged to Co. B, 3rd Bn. U. S. G. he was discharged from the service December 25, 1918.

Was born in Lamotte, Township, October19, 1892, son of Albert H. and Elizabeth Vatters, attended the District school. His occupation was farming he has two sisters and three brothers: Ludelia and Beatrice; Walter, Perry and Bryon. He is a Selective Service man and went to Camp Custer April 1, 1918. Was transferred to Camp Gordon, Ga., May 3, and on the 23rd of the same month was sent Camp McClellan, Ala. Sailed for overseas the middle of June. He is a member of Co. K, 115th Infantry. Was wounded during the battle of Argonne Forest October 19, 1918. He is still in the service.

Was born in Fremont Township, May 12, 1895, son of William and Harriett Wilson, attended Yale high school AND Ferris Institute. His occupation was stenographer. He is Selective Service man and went to Camp Custer September 7, 1918. He belongs to 33rd Co., 9th Brigade, 160th Depot Brigade. On September 29th was assigned to Local Board work and sent to Sandusky, Michigan. He has been discharged from the service.

Was born in Washington Town ship, July 8, 1892, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clark Sheldon, attended Croswell high school and Michigan Agriculture and horticulture. He has six sisters and three brothers: Mrs. Louis Falls, Helen, Mrs. Edward Camm, Mrs. George Topping, Mrs. Authur Pomeroy , Mrs. J. T. Miduske; Hiram J., Albert and James. He is an Enlisted man entering the navy at Norfolk, Va. December 13, 1917. Attended officers’ training school and received promotion to rank of Ensign June 10, 1918. He has been assigned to the U. S. S. Raleigh and still is in his country’s service.

As a Selective Service man he was sent to camp Eustis, Va., October 24, 1918. He was assigned to the Anti Aircraft squad. Was promoted to rank of First Class Private. Was honorably discharged from the service and returned home December 21, 1918.

Was born at Richmond, Michigan November 25, 1889, son of Albert and Eula Todd, attended the district school at Red Star and Juhl. His occupation was farming. He has one brother and sister: Roy and Mrs. Viggo Smith. He is a Selective Service man and went with the contingent to Camp Custer May 27, 1918. Was sent to Cap Mills, N. Y., port of embarkation July 15, 1918, sailing for Russia in August. He belongs to Co. A, 339th Infantry. Was wounded October 8, 1918, while engaged in battle in Russia, where he is still stationed with his company.

He has four brothers and four sisters: Adin, Glidden, Joseph, Archie; Edna, Lydia, Jean, and Ida. He is a selective Service man and went to Camp Custer April 1, 1918. Was transferred to Fort Riley, Kansas, in May and on July 5, was again transferred to Camp Greenleaf, Ga. He is a member of Co. C, Cooks and Bakers Department. He has not been discharged from the service.

Was born at Parisville, Huron County, October 3, 1897, son of Anthony and Mary Pinok attended the Austin school. His occupation was farming. He has two sisters and three brothers. He went to Camp Mills. N. Y., in July, of the same year sailing for Russia the following month—August , where he is now stationed. He is a member of the 339th Infantry.

MINDEN CITY

Was born in Fosterville, April 16, 1895, son of Louis and Anna Riedel, attended Minden City and Harbor Beach high schools. His occupation was grain business. He has three brothers and two sisters: Albert, Louis and Paul; Mrs. A. N. Bostwick and Nattie. He is a Selective Service man and left for Camp Custer September 21, 1918, and was transferred to Camp Mill, July 8, and left for overseas July 20. He became a corporal about two weeks after he left Camp Custer, and was promoted to sergeant about the first of November, 1918. He also attended officer’s training camp in France but did not get commissions on account of signing armistice and order made not to issue any more commissions. He was a member of Co. F, 338th Infantry. He returned. He was married June 8, 1917, at Harbor Beach, to Miss Gladys Kelly.

Y., with the 85th Division and sailed for Archangel, Russia, where he is now stationed.

Was born in Marlette April 11, 1899, son of Mr. and Mrs. William B. Wilson, and attended the Marlette high school and Ypsilanti. He has two brothers and two sisters: Bruce, George; Grace, Jean. He enlisted at East Lansing, October 1, 1918, and was a member of Co. E. He was honorably discharged December 21, 1918.

 

 

PTE. TELFORD J. RUSHTON

DECKERVILLE

Was born in Forester Township, November 23, 1894, son of George and Kate Rushton, attended Forester school and later in Port Huron. His occupation as farming. He has one brother: Orvil E. He was a selective Service man and left for Camp Custer April 29, 1918, where he served two months and ten days, when he was discharged from the service on account of physical disability. He was a member of Co. F, 310th Ammunition Train.

 

 

PTE. GEORGE McDONALD

Was born in Washington Township, August 19, 1986, son of Robert and Mary A. McDonald, attended the District school. His occupation was farming. He has three brothers and one sister: Thomas, Joseph and Robert; Bessie. He is a Selective Service man and went to Camp Custer August 30, 1918. He was a member of Co. L. He was honorably discharged from the service December 12, 1919. He was married to Miss Mary Garbutt, at Sandusky, June, 1917.

He arrived home from overseas the first of April, 1919, and has received his discharge from the service.

G, 34th Infantry, 7th Division. He is still in the service.

Was born at Marlette, July 28, 1894, son of Mrs. C. W. Arthur, attended the Marlette schools. His occupation was farming. He had two sisters: Mrs. Ira Spears and Mrs. Frank A. Siple. He was the leader of a contingent of Selective service men. That went to Ann Arbor for special mechanical training. He belonged to 2nd Co. Division B. He died October 27, 1918, at An Arbor of Pneumonia.

He sailed for overseas August 12, 1918, with the 51st Co. 5th Marine Carps. He is now with the army of occupation in the marine motor boat patrol at Bendrof, Germany, on the Rhine. Was assigned to duty at Camp Taylor, Louisville, Ky., Attached to Machine Gun Co., 334 Infantry, April 17, 1918, transferred to Replacement Camp At Camp Gordon, Ga.; assigned as Brigade Adjutant of 5th Brigade 2nd replacement Regiment. September 24, 1918 was promoted to Infantry Captain and placed in command of Co. F, 2nd Replacement Regiment. Received his honorable discharge from the service December 15, 1918.

Was born in Greenleaf Township, October 16, 1894, son of Mrs. Margaret Nicol, attended the Sandusky high school and Michigan Agricultural College. His occupation s civil engineer. He has two brothers and two sisters: James and George; Lila and Mrs. Jean Chase. While in the service his father, Thomas J. Nicol, and brother Stuart B., died. He is a Selective Service man and went to Camp Custer September 5, 1917, a leader of the contingent . he enlisted at Lansing, May 8, 1917, and went to the officers training camp at Fort Sheridan, received his honorable discharge and came to Sandusky and was among the first of the Selective Service men to go from this county. From Camp Custer was transferred to Camp Lee, Va. And in June, 1918, while there he received his commission as 2nd Lieutenant. Was sent to Camp McArthur, Texas, and Camp Grant, Ill. In charge of soldiers. In September, 1918, was transferred back to Camp Custer. He belong to the Military Police. He received his honorable discharge. March, 1919. Was married to Miss Hired Eileen Nehman, at Detroit, December 22, 1917.

He sailed for France in July, 1918. Received promotion to rank of Corporal in February, 1918, and in July was made Sergeant. He is a member of Co. F, 338th Infantry and is still in the service.

 

PTE. JOHN McMANN

DECKER

Was born in Port Huron, October 25, 1893, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mathew McMann, and attended District schools. His occupation was farming. He has two sisters and two brothers: Eva and Maud; Gordon and Neil. He is a Selective Service man and went to Camp Custer April 29, 1918. Was transferred to Camp Mills, N. Y., in August, from there he embarked for France. He was a member of Co. K, 16th Infantry. He as in the battle of Argonne Forest. Was honorably discharged from the service and returned home in April, 1919.

PTE. MELBOURNE QUIGG

CARSONVILLE

Was born in Bridgehampton Township, January 18, 1890, son of Alexander and Alice Quigg, and attended the District school. His occupation was farming. He has five sisters and three brothers: Maggie, Alice, Mary, Mattie, and Addie; James and Alexander, and Sidney. He is a Selective Service man

and went to Camp Custer May 27, 1918. He is a member of Conservation and Reclamation Co., and was sent Alexandria, La., September 15, 1918. He is still in the service.

MINDEN CITY

Was born in Delaware Township, September 25, 1887, son of Celestion and Anna Clor, attended the District school. His occupation was farming. He has three brothers and two sisters: Joseph, Peter and Albert.; Rose Stimpfl and Anna Vandalen. He is a Selective Service man, went to Camp Custer May 27, 1918. On July 20, was sent to Allenwood, Vermont. He was a member of Co. C, 27Bn. United States Guards. Received his honorably discharge at Portsmouth, N. H. December 24, 1918.

Was born at Paris, Huron County, January 6, 1889, son of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Stepka, attended the Paris school. His occupation was farming. He has five brothers and seven sisters: Andrew, John, Toney, Edward and Leo; Mary, Stazy, Katie, Pauline, Maggie, Frances and Agnes. He is Selective Service man and went to Camp Custer May 27, 1918. Was transferred to Camp Mills N. Y., in July, sailing for Russia on the 21st of that month. He is now station at Archangel, Russia, with Co. A, 339th Infantry. He was wounded March 9, 1919.

DECKERVILLE

 

Was born in Custer Township April 29, 1896, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Kenny, attended the Downington school. His occupation was farming. He is a Selective Service man and went to Camp Cuter November 23, 1917. Was transferred to Camp McArthur, Texas, in December with the 32nd Division in July he was wounded, on the 25th. After spending several months in the hospital overseas he was sent home landing November 29. He has been honorably discharged from service.
