PTE. LAWRENCE D. GROH

SANDUSKY

 

Was born in Elmer township, March 19, 1896, son of Jacob and Mary Groh, attended the District school. His occupation was farming. he had one brother and three sisters: Loius; Della, Bertha and Hattie. He is a Selective Service men and went to Camp Custer April 29, 1918. Was transferred to Mills, N. Y., sailing for France July 1918. He was a member of Co. M, 16th Infantry, First Division. Was killed in the Meuse- Argonne battle October 11, 1918.

CASH

Was born in Sanilac County, July 12, 1896, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Cash, attended the District school of Cash, and high school at Croswell. His occupation was farming. he has two sisters and five brothers: He is a Selective Service man and went to camp Custer August 26, 1918, and later transferred to Camp Sherman, Ohio. He is a member of the medical Department, 40th Infantry and still is in the service.

PTE. FAYE HULBERT KING

SANDUSKY

Was born in Elk Township, September 25, 1895, son of Alfred C. and Sarah A. King, attended the Poplar

point and Sandusky schools. His occupation was bill poster and was in the employ of Walker & Co., of Detroit. He has two brothers and one sister: Orville E. and Clearance G.; Delia. He is a Selective Service man and went to Camp Custer November 23, 1917. Was promoted to rank of Saddler soon after arriving at camp. Was transferred to Camp Custer November 23, 1918, sailing with the 85th Division that month for France. He was a member of Machine Gun Co., 337th Infantry. He received his honorably discharge from the service April 1919.

PTE. RAY F. BICKLE

SANDUSKY

Was born at port Sanilac, May 25, 1896, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Bickle, attended school at Sandusky. Big Rapids and Ypsilanti. He was a Selective Service man and one of the first to leave this county for Camp Custer, departing September 6, 1917. February 27, 1918, was sent to Camp Green N. C., Where he entered the regular army. Was transferred to Camp Merritt, N. J., May 12, sailing for France the 22nd of that month, landing at Bordeaux, on the 30th. He is a First Class Private, and belonged to 4th Trench He was wounded at Chateau Thierry August 12. He arrived home in May, 1919, having received his honorable discharge.

CORPORAL ROSS ROY MOORE

SNOVER

Was born in Moore Township, October , 1889, son of William Walker and Mary Ellen Moore, and acquired his education at the District schools. His occupation was motor mechanic. He has three sisters and two brothers: Mabel E., Glays V. and Mary E,; Floyd A. and John N. He was married to Olga M. Walthers, of Detroit, in Windsor, July 1912. He is an Enlisted man, entering the service at Detroit October 9, 1917, was sent to Columbus Barracks, and later was sent to Kelly Field, Texas, and was afterwards sent McCook Field Dayton, Ohio, with the 246th aero squadron, but was transferred to the 807th aero squadron, after which he was attached to the 881st aero balloon squadron, 10th Detachment. He was promoted to rank of Corporal, December1, 1917. He received his honorable discharge January 6, 1919, and returned home without the opportunity of going across.

SANDUSKY

Was born in Moore Township, June 14, 1887, son of Alfred and Jennie Pitcher, attended the district school. His occupation was farming. He has two brothers and one sister: Burton A. and Bristol; Mary. He was a Selective Service man and went to Camp Custer September 21, 1917, was transferred to Camp MacArthur, Texas in October. He was a member of a Machine Gun Co., 125th Infantry. Was discharged from the service December 21, 1917.

Was born at Croswell, July 30, 1893, son of Edward and Edith Boddy, attended the District school. His occupation was millwright. He has one sister and seven brothers: May; Ray, Ross, Russell, Ralph, Rhodan, Rennie, and Elmer. He was a Selective Service man and went to Camp Custer April 29, 1918. Was advanced to rank of mechanic June 6; transferred to Camp Mills, N. Y., July 14, sailing for overseas July 22. He saw active service on the Belgium Front from October 31, to November 4. He belonged to Co. K, 147th Infantry, 37th Division. He returned home April 12, 1919. He was married to Miss Nina Nestell, at Toledo, September 29, 1917.

DECKER

 

Was born at Dansville, Illinois, October 31, 1992, son of William C. and Lydia M. Fleming, attended school at Dansville and Grand Rapids and Chicago. His occupation was veterinarian. He has three sisters and one brother: Mrs. Walter Baker, Jane and Mrs. Marvin Ehlers; Harvey. He is a Selective Service man and went to Camp Custer September 6, 1917. Was promoted to rank of Quartermaster Sergeant November 5, 1917. He was a member of the Auxiliary Remount Depot No. 320.

 

PTE. HENRY DORLAND

PECK

Was born in Elk Township, September 29, 1893, son of Erastus and Irene Dorland , attended the District school. His occupation was farming. He has three sisters and two brothers: Mrs. M. Apsey, Mrs. Fries, and Mrs. G Apsey; Purl and Basil. He is a Selective Service man and went to Camp Strong, Chicago, April 29, 1918, for special mechanical training. Was transferred to England, June 11, and went to France July 31. He was a member of 71st Artillery Battery. He received his discharge and returned home March 8, 1919.

MINDEN CITY

 

Was born at Minden City, April 11, 1896, son of Redford C. and Aseneth I. Kelley, attended the District school. His occupation was farming. he had three brothers and two sisters: Howard, Roy, and Homer; Nina and Stella. He was an enlisted man joining the service at Detroit November 20, 1917.he left for overseas service February 28, 1918. He died of labor pneumonia September 28, 1918, at St. Maxient France.

DECKER

 

Was born in Lapeer County, May 20, 1893, son of Jacob and Mary Saigeon, and attended the District school. His occupation was farming. He has three brothers and one sister: John, George and James; Mabel. He is a Selective Service man and went from St. Clair county. Was transferred to Camp Mills N. Y., July 25, 1918, and sailed for France in August. He is a member of Co. G, 7th Infantry. He was captured by the Germans and was released after signing of armistice. He has not returned home.

Was born in Lexington, January 25, 1895, son of Charles and Jennie Crawford, attended the district school. His occupation was farming. He has two brothers and one sister: Kenneth and Gerald; Maude. He is a Selective Service man and went to Camp Greenleaf, March 5, 1918. Was transferred to port of embarkation May 30, 1918, sailing for France, June 8. He belongs to 139th Ambulance Co. 110th Sanitary Train. He received his discharge from the service, February 19, 1919.

LEXINGTON

Was born at Chatham, Ontario, July 26, 1894, son of William and Minnie Molesworth, attended the Lexington

schools. His occupation was mechanic. He is a Selective

service man and went to Camp Custer September 21, 1917. He was sent to the Motor Schools at Rock Island, Ill., Peoroa and Clintonville Wis., and later was sent back to Camp Custer and left there with the 85th Division to the port of embankment June 15, 1918, sailing for overseas the last of that month. He is a member of the 328th Field Artillery, and has not been return home.

Was born in Flynn Township, September 25, 1895, son of John Brigg and Margaret J. Lord, and attended school in Fremont. His occupation was threshing. He has two brothers and one sister: Russell and Clarence; Wealtha. He is a Selective Service man and left for Camp Custer June 2, 1918; transferred to Long Island, and later went overseas. He is still in the service.

 

CORP. WILLIAM JOHNSON

SANDUSKY

Was born in Parkhill, Ontario, March 25, 1888, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Johnson, attended the Port Hope and Richmondville schools. He has one sister, Etta. He was an enlisted men, joining the Coast Artillery at San Francisco, November, 1914. Was stationed at Camp John Hays. Philippine Islands. Was transferred back to Fort McDowell, California, in 1918, from there to Camp Jacksonville, Fla. He sailed from Newport News June 28, for France. He was a member of the 412th M. S. T. He has returned home.

 

PTE. VICTOR L. CASH

CASH

Was born in Sanilac County, January 14, 1892, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Cash, attended the District school of Cash. His occupation was machinist. He has two sisters and five brothers. He enlisted in the Ordnance Department at Detroit December, 117, going to Camp Grant, Ill., and later transferred to Camp Sheridan and Camp Hancock, leaving for France in June, 1918. He is still in the service.

SERGT. MAJOR HARRY PLAXTON

SANDUSKY

Was born at Sandusky, August 31, 1894, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Plaxton, attended school at Sandusky and at Ypsilanti. His occupation was bookkeeper. He has one sister Etta P. He is a Selective Service man and went to Camp Custer September 21, 1917. He was a member of the 85th Division and was sent to Camp Mills N. Y., in June, 1918, sailing for France July 29, 1918. Was promoted to rank of Regimental Sergeant-Major October, 1918. Was a member of Headquarters Co. 328th Field Artillery. He return to this country in April and received his honorable discharge from the service May, 1919.

CORP. CALVIN E. HAMMOND

SANDUSKY

Was born at Old Brockway, St. Clair County,

February 9, 1893, son of son of Calvin and Minnie Hammond, attended the Sandusky schools. His occupation was electrocution. He has three brothers and one sister: Earl, Bryant and Robert; Mrs. T.L. Ingersoil. He is a Selective Service man and went to Camp Custer from St. Clair County. He was promoted to rank of Corporal July 1. Was transferred to Camp Mills, July 12, 1918, sailing for France the 21st of that month. He is a member of Co. C, 337th Infantry, and assigned to the Signal Corps. He has not turned home.

Was discharged from the service January 27, 1919.

Was born in Argyle Township, July 26, 1894, son of Charles and Mary Buffey, attended the District school. He has four brothers and four sisters: Bernard, Floyd, George and Earl; Alice, Mrs. John Watson, Lulu and Sarah. He was a Selective Service man went to Camp Custer November 23, 1917. Later he was sent to San Antonio, Texas, and from there to Middletown< Pa. He was a member of the 616th Aco Supply Squadron. Received his honorable discharge from the service January 24, 1919. Was married to Miss Nora Baker, at Flint, October 6, 1917.

 

SERGT. EINER L. NIELSEN

JUHL

Was born at Cleveland Ohio, March 19, 1896, son of L. V. Nielsen, attended District school at Big Rapids. His occupation was farming. he has one sister and three brothers: Mrs. P. C. Appel; C. A., Russell and William. He was an enlisted man joining the aviation Corps. at Mt. Clemens December 12, 1917. Was promoted to rank of Corporal February 19, 1918, advance to rank of Sergeant May 3, and on September 14, was made Sergeant First Class. He belongs to Flying School. Detachment. He has been discharged from the service.

Was born in Sanilac Township, October 24, 1894, son of Horace and Sarah Rathburn, attended the District school. His occupation was carpentry. He has two brothers and one sister: Glenn and Horace; Esther. He was a Selective service man and went to Camp Custer May 27, 1918. Was transferred to Boston, Mass., a member of Co. A, 339th Infantry. Was promoted to rank of First Class Private August 1. Was discharged from the service December 25, 1918.

Was born in Washington township, February 9, 1898, son of John and Annie Paling, attended the District school. He was an enlisted man and went to Columbus Barracks May1, 1918. Was transferred to Camp Rodman, Mass. He sailed for France September 30, a member of the 68th Coast Artillery Corps. he returned home February 15, 1919.

Was born in St. Clair Township, in 1894, attended the District School. His occupation was carpentry. He has two brothers and two sisters: Emil, and Roy; Nora and Cora. He is an Enlisted man joining the Navy, December 14, 1917, at Detroit and was sent to Philadelphia. February 1, 1918, was advanced to Carpenter Mate First Class, sailed for overseas April 9. He received his discharge from the service, February 19, 1919.

MARLETTE

Was born at Sandusky July 28, 1892, son of Josiah and Catherine Bartley, and acquired his education at the Ubly and Sandusky Schools. His occupation was electrician. He has three brothers and one sister: Arthur, George and Robert; Lucy. He is an Enlisted man entering the service at Saginaw, November, 1917, and a month later sent to San Antonio, Texas. In January, 1917, he was sent to Greenville, South Carolina, being promoted to rank of Sergeant. He sailed for overseas March, 1918, a member of Construction No. 1, A. S. S. C. He is still overseas.

 

 

PTE. ALBERT W. BUEEN

SANDUSKY

 

Was born in London, England, July 25, 1887. He attended school in the city of his birth. His occupation is farming. he has two brothers and one sister: William and Edwin; Mabel. He is a Selective Service man and went of 26th Company, and was never transferred. Was discharged from the service December 9, 1918.

Was born at Sandusky, July 2, 1893, son of Thomas Edward and Hannah Loop Dawson, attended the Sandusky schools and Academy, Alton, Ill. His occupation is clerk. He was a Selective Service man and went to Camp Custer April Custer April 30, 1918. Was assigned to 14th Co. 4th Bn, 160 Depot Brigade. Received his honorable discharge from the service, May 22, 1918 on account of valvular heart trouble. Was married to Leona Catherine Yandean, at Detroit, April 7, 1918.

Was born at Fairburn, Ill., July 23, 1889, son of David and Ellen Price, acquired his education in the city of his birth. His occupation was farming. he has one brother and four sisters: William; Anna, Elizabeth, Reta and Frances. He is a Selective Service man going to Camp Custer September 21, 1917. He was transferred to Camp Mills, N. Y., July 20, 1918, sailed for overseas a few days later. He belongs to Co. F, 338th Infantry, but was transferred to the 339th Infantry. He is now in Russia.

Was born in Clyde Township, St. Clair County, April 13, 1893, son of George W. and Mary J. Davidson, attended school at port Huron and the Detroit University School. His occupation was Clerical work. He has four sisters and one brother: Florence, Emma, Helen and Alice; James. He is a Selective Service man and went to Camp Custer June 6, 1918. He was advanced to rank of Wagoner. He sailed for France with the 85th Division in July, a member of the 338th Ambulance Train, later was transferred to the 5th Army Corps. he is still in the service.

Was born at Carsonville, March 23, 1894, son Mr. and Mrs. John Dwyer, attended the Carsonville schools. His occupation was Machinist. He has five sisters and one brother: Mary, Kathryn, Margaret, Julia and Mabeth; Joseph. He is a Selective Service man and went to Camp Custer April 1, 1918, later was transferred to Camp Green N. C. He sailed for France the latter part of June. He is a member of 3rd Co., 4th Motor Mechanic Air Service. He has not received his discharged.

PTE. GUY W. STOCKS

BROWN CITY

Was born at Peck, February 20, 1893, son of Mr. and Mrs. Valentine Stocks, attended the Peck schools. His occupation was farming he was a Selective Service man and went Camp Custer April 1, 1918. On April 22, was transferred to Camp Gordon, Ga., sailed for France June 30. He was a member of the 27th Division, 52nd Brigade, 105th Field Artillery, Battery B. He was on the front line nine weeks and took part in twelve battles. He returned home April 4, 1919.

 

PTE. FINLEY CHISHOLM

CARSONVILLE

Was born in Watertown Township October 3, 1895, son of Henry and Isabell Chisholm, attended the District school. His occupation was farming. He had two sisters and two step-brothers: Winnifred and Violet; Henry and Ross. He is a Selective Service man and went to Camp Custer April 29, 1918. Was transferred to Camp Mills, N. Y., July 12, sailing for France in August. He was a member of Co. H, 338th Infantry. While engaged in active duty service he was wounded October 8, and died October 25, 1918.

Was born at Snover, June 30, 1888, son of Charles and Sarah Dorman, attended the Snover School. His occupation was farming. He has one brother and sister: Archie and Florence. He is a S elective service man and went to Camp Custer May 27, 1918. He is a member of the 339th Infantry, Co. H. He sailed for Russia July, 191, where he is now stationed.

SERGT. BRYANT J. HAMMOND

Was born at Spring Hill, St. Clair County, October 27, 1894, son of Calvin and Minnie Hammond, attended the Sandusky schools. He has three brothers and one sister: Earl, Calvin and Robert; Mrs. T. L. Ingersoll. He is an Enlisted man and joined the United States Marines. Went to Paris Island, S. C., April 1, 1918, for training. Was transferred May 1st to Galveston, Texas. He is a member of the 108th Company, 8th Regiment. Was promoted to rank of Corporal August 1. He is stationed at Galveston, Texas, where he is an instructor in bayonet work, ad has been advanced to rank of Sergeant.

SANDUSKY

Was born in Watertown Township, September 3, 1896, son of Henry and Heriette Wesch, attended the McClure school. His occupation was garage man. he has three sisters: Glena, Lillian and Crena. He was a Selective Service man and went to Camp Custer August 29, 1918. Was a member of Headquarters Co., 42nd Regiment, Field Artillery. Was discharged from the service January 17, 1919.

 

PTE. ORRIN J. HILL

SANDUSKY

Was born Moore Township, March 3, 1892, son of Lafayette and Sarah Hill, attended the Urban school. His occupation was farming. He has four brothers and five sisters. He was a selective service man and went to Camp Custer May 27, 1918. He was a member of Co. M, 339th Infantry, Received his discharge November 27, 1918.

CORP. ROGER M. CASH

CASH

Was born in Sanilac County, April 24, 1898, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Cash attended school of Cash. He has two sisters and five brothers. His occupation was farming. He is an Enlisted man, Enlisting in the regular army at Detroit May 19, 1917, going to Columbus Barracks, later transferred to El Paso, Texas, and then to Syracuse France December 1,, 1917. He is a member of Battery E, 15th F.H. one of the combat regiments of France 2nd Division, and also a member of Signal Corps, he was promoted to rank of Corporal September 9, 1917. He took part in the battles of Belleau Woods, Boureschez, Vaux, and has been twice wounded. He is now with the army of occupation on the Rhine, Second Division.

 

PTE. HAMILTON JOHNSON

MARLETTE

Was born in Burnside Lapeer, County, September 2, 1897, son of Hugh and Elva Johnson, attended school at Burnside and Gladwin. His occupation was machinist. He has four sisters: Mrs. Flora Atkins, Mrs. Emerson Kitch, Alice and Gertrude. He was a Selective Service man and left for Camp Custer September 21, 1917. He belonged to Q. M. C. and ranked as a First Class Private. He died at Camp Custer February 26, 1918, of pneumonia.

Was born at Detroit January 22, 1897, son of Albert and Carrie Schmidt, attended Hyslop school. His occupation as carpentry. He was a Selective Service man and went to Camp Custer August 29, 1918, received the rating of Mechanic September 25, and was made a First Class Private October 25. He was a member of Co. C, 41st Machine Gun Bu. H received his discharged from the service January 28, 1919.

He has seven brothers and two sisters: Edward, William, Rudolph, Arthur, Lawrence, Gilbert and Albert; Lydia and Frances. He was a Selective Service man and went to camp Custer September 21, 1917, was transferred to Camp MacArthur, Texas, October 25. He sailed for overseas February 7, 1918. He was a member of Co. E, 125th Infantry, 32nd Division. He returned home in May, 1919.

He is Selective Service man and went to Camp /Custer August 30, 1918, assistant leader of his contingent. He was a member of 44th Co., 11Bn, 160th Depot Brigade. He has been discharged from the service.

Was born at Clifford, Michigan, December 8, 1892, son of John and Ida Lampman, attended the Sandusky schools. He has two brothers: John and Thomas. He was a Selective Service man and went to Columbus Barracks May 10 1918, was transferred to Camp MacArthur, Texas July 12. He was a member of Casual Co. 2. On account of poor health was discharged from the service August 28, 1918.

His occupation was farming. he has two brothers and two sisters: John and Leonard; Laura and Mrs. Richard Frank. He is a Selective Service man and went to Camp Cutter April 1, 1918. Was transferred to Camp Gordon, GA, on May 2. He received promotion to rank of Corporal and was sent to Camp McClellan, Ga. He is a member of Co. B, M. G. Battalion. He has returned home.

 

PTE. OTTO L. MICHENER

SANDUSKY

Was born in Moore Township November 16, 1895, son of John and Hannah Michener, attended the district school. His occupation was farming and machinist, he has one sister, Laurena. He is a Selective Service man and went to Camp Custer May 27, 1918, later transferred to Fort Wayne, Detroit. he Was a member of the 5th Aerial Squad. He has been discharged from the service.

Was born in Elmer Township, March 15, 1891, son of August E. and Mary Ann Kinbuam, attended the District school. His occupation was farming. he has three brothers and three sisters: Samual, Ervin, and Otto; Augusta, Bertha and Anna. He is Selective Service man and went to Camp Custer May 27, 1918. Was sent to Camp Mills, N. Y., July 15, sailing for overseas the first of August. He is a member Co. M, 339th Infantry and still in the service.
